It is not uncommon to see some extensive changes between models of the same car as they develop, but the all-new Peugeot 3008 SUV looks drastically different from the retiring version. Our motoring journalist, Tim Barnes-Clay, has been driving one for the last month. Here are his impressions of the 3008 SUV 1.2 GT Line.
Car of the Year
That departing 3008, ushered in during 2008, was a plain, stout, sports utility vehicle that did little to enthuse buyers. The brand-new Peugeot 3008 SUV, though, is a far different creature, laying to rest the ungainly image of the last model and pulling off the European Car of the Year accolade.
From time to time, it can be tough to differentiate SUVs out on the tarmac because lots of them drive similarly. Many are made for comfort, and that’s what the latest 3008 SUV is tweaked for. The tiny steering wheel and nimble handling give a feeling of liveliness, even if that’s not necessarily the case, as it’s a lofty, weighty car. That’s not a criticism by the way; the engineers and designers have done well covering the conventional weaknesses of a sport utility vehicle’s dynamics.
There’s a healthy assortment of engines available: two petrol units in the form of a 131PS 1.2-litre and a 165PS 1.6-litre turbo. Then there are two turbo diesel powerplants – a 1.6-litre and a 2.0-litre lump. What fits your needs the best is basically going to hinge on the kind of motoring you do. Quick town trips suit the 1.2-litre petrol 3008 SUV more, while lengthier drives will suit the possible 70mpg attainable from the 1.6-litre diesel model.
I got behind the wheel of the 1.2 petrol 3008 SUV 131PS GT Line spec, fitted with a manual transmission. On the move, things feel energetic, and the weighting of the steering wheel is exactly right. The Peugeot holds on to the asphalt like a cat’s claws latch on to the skin, and mid-range muscle is good, so you can gather speed moderately, if not stunningly, well. The six-speed gearbox is smooth shifting, and the 3008 SUV delivers a muted ride. Wind whistle and tyre rumble are largely kept out of the car’s cabin, too. All this just adds to the French-made motor’s classiness.
The Peugeot 3008 SUV delivers a self-possessed ride with seats that give the right kind of support and comfort needed for long distance cruising. Additionally, the 3008 SUV’s suspension mops up potholes without protesting. Notably, the car doesn’t tilt into corners. Indeed, body lean is very well controlled. This surprised me a little, as compact SUVs aren’t always the kind of transport to stay so unflappable on twisting tarmacadam.
The replacement Peugeot 3008 comes in four echelons of trim: Active, Allure, GT Line and GT. Standard fit safety equipment comprises rear parking sensors and automatic emergency braking. The GT Line version, as tested here, hasn’t got any additional safety gear – just flashier looks. But it has all the safety tackle you need, and, as with all Peugeot 3008 SUVs, it holds the highest five-star Euro NCAP crash-test rating.
A set-of-wheels can look awesome and it can have all the paraphernalia on the planet jam-packed into it – but it’s no use if it isn’t efficient and it doesn’t drive well. There are no worries to be had with the 3008 SUV. The 1.2 GT Line’s combined average fuel consumption of 55.4mpg and 117g/km of CO2 means running costs are low, mixed with hearty, but not necessarily quick performance. Zero to 62mph is realised in 10.8 seconds and the 3008 SUV 1.2 GT Line’s top speed is 117mph.
The Peugeot 3008 SUV’s basic price-tag is £21,795, but expect pay £25,655 for the petrol-propelled GT Line I drove. An entry-level Nissan Qashqai will set you back £18,545, and the SEAT Ateca costs from £17,990. But I think the new 3008 SUV’s further cost is acceptable because it’s more upscale inside than these two adversaries. Cabin materials consist of swathes of carbon decoration and textiles, broken up with brushed chrome. They even conceal some areas not usually found in SUVs, such as the dashboard inlay. It’s all very fashionable and eye-catching. The Peugeot 3008 SUV is just as chic externally, and it drives well while delivering a contented ride for all occupants.
