Whenever there is a motor show there are is always some headline grabbing supercars to eclipse many of the cars that people will actually buy. This year’s Frankfurt motor show is no exception, we have already looked at some of the exciting but more realistic launches going on at the show, now it is time to be a bit more decadent and look and the mad, bad and the brilliant.
It was only a matter of time before the big “B” took a leap into the SUV market. This super luxurious offering is going to become the choice for the rich and the famous or a bit of a flop. It is going to be powered by both W12 engine options and V8 hybrids which will allegedly allow it to drive for a whole 30 miles without using the normal engine. This is just to get round some new city emissions regulations so Bentley haven’t gone all green for no reason. The Bentayga will clearly be a capable off roader and it will, no doubt be very luxurious but it remains to be seen if it can challenge the mighty Range Rover as the high end 4X4 of choice.
Ferrari 488 Spider
A show stopper and a headline grabber? certainly. An amazing car? absolutely. When the 488 was launched recently every car fan and teenage boy went weak at the knees. How could it possibly be more beautiful than the 458? yet is was and the Spider is no different. There is always issues with convertible cars loosing some of the rigid nature of the chassis, for most people it is never an issue but for really fast cars it does make a difference. Due to the use of 11 different alloys in the subframe the 488 claims to maintain rigidity even more than the 458 and it’s is lighter too.
The real headlines are more obvious though, the 488 Spider has stunning flying buttresses that the coupé doesn’t but it is the speed that is really grabbing everyone’s attention. This beautiful, light and awe inspiring car can leap from 0 to 60 mph in just 3 seconds, it will also do 0- 124 mph in 8.7 seconds,if those stats don’t impress you then nothing will.
This 450bhp car was show off at Goodwood for the first time. It hails a new range of cars from this iconic British car maker. This sub 900kg rocket will do 0-60mph in under 3.0 seconds but the exact figure is yet to be released. Let’s be honest, when you are getting to 60mph in anything around 3 seconds, the odd 0.2 or 0.4 either way is not going to make much difference, you are accelerating very fast indeed. In fact the 3-Eleven is so quick to 60 it will be sitting up there with the McLaren P1 and La Ferrari and all for under £90,000. According to Lotus is it no slouch in the corners either and it’s hoping to be very close to the sub 7 minute Nurburgring record set by the Porsche 918. Who said British Motoring was dead?
The list of amazing cars going on show at the Frankfurt motor show is long and it is certainly distinguished. There are the every day cars that will actually be part of a lot of peoples lives, there are the aspirational cars the many people can hope to own one day and there are the mind blowing supercars that sadly only a few will ever own but hopefully the odd one or two more might just get to sit in one day. Which ever car you have your eye on, we wish you luck in getting hold of it and we hope you enjoy it.
