From David and Goliath to Rocky, everybody loves the underdog, but few could have predicted the outcome of this face-off on the drag strip!
Pitting a Lamborghini Murcielago against a lowly and battered old Fiat Cinquecento might seem like the beginning of a cruel joke, but little Fiat soon proved that there’s more to it than meets the eye.
The two Italian machines lined up on the starting line for a brief race, with the driver of the Fiat soon leaving the infinitely more expensive Murcielago playing catch up, much to the amazement of the crowd.
Surprising result for the Fiat
First launched in 1991 as a follow-up to Fiat’s 126 city car, the Cinquecento is perhaps now best known for its role as the famously hapless yellow car from The Inbetweeners.
In its hottest guide, the Cinquecento only came with a tiny 1.1-litre engine, so given the immense power and the rally-esque engine note of the drag racer, it’s safe to say it’s since been upgraded.
No exact details are known about what modifications have been made to the car in the video, but it’s more than likely that a new engine has been fitted, along with various other performance tweaks.
Back in 2012, freelance design group Lazzarini Design created a radical concept car based on the Fiat Cinquecento, complete with a modern new bodystyle and the same V8 engine as the Ferrari 458 Italia supercar.
Complete with a pretty unsubtle bodykit, a huge spoiler and a roll cage on the inside, the 550 Italia concept, as it was known, also happened to come with an insane price tag of 550,000 Euros.
Lazzarini fitted it out with the 4.5-litre V8 which comes in the 458 Italia and which had been tuned to offer a massive 550bhp. Considering that the Ferrari can hit 62mph from a standstill in 3.4 seconds and the Fiat-based concept is around 1,000lbs lighter, its performance would be truly titanic.
Radical Fiat concept car
It’s unlikely, however, that the Cinquecento in the race video comes with an engine quite that hot, but regardless it’s a pretty impressive thing to watch, even if you feel a little bad for the Lambo driver!
While the Cinquecento is no longer available new in the UK, Perrys offers the full range of modern Fiat models at highly competitive prices, including the hugely popular 500 city car.
