The all-new Renault Twingo has officially been named the City Car of the Year at the prestigious UK Car of the Year Awards.
This marks the second such award that the Twingo has taken in the past six months, after it was also named City Car of the Year towards the end of last year at the Top Gear Magazine Awards.
Judges at the awards picked the Twingo for the top spot thanks to its cute and interesting design, innovative features that set it apart from the competition and its fun driving characteristics.
‘Fun to drive and surprisingly spacious’
John Challen, managing director of the UK Car of the Year Awards and editor of the awards’ website, said: “Renault returns to the city car segment with a cracker.
“Fun to drive, surprisingly spacious inside and brave enough to try a novel approach to vehicle engineering in this sector.”
Only in their second year, the UK Car of the Year Awards have already become established as some of the best measures of a car’s capability, keeping consumers informed about their buying decisions.
The judging panel consists of 27 independent motoring journalists from a range of publications, who assess more than 100 new cars to produce winners in 12 different categories.
Judges this year included Tom Ford from Top Gear, Wheeler Dealers’ Mike Brewer and Richard Bremner of Autocar, all of whom were more than impressed with the funky Twingo.
Ken Ramirez, Renault UK’s managing director, said: “To win ‘City Car of the Year’ is a fantastic achievement and one that everyone at Renault can be very proud of.
“The All-New Twingo stands out amongst a competitive city car category thanks to its stunning design and made-for-city agility from the innovative rear-engined layout.”
He added: “We expected the latest Twingo to be a popular addition to the market, so it’s great to know the UK Car of the Year Awards panel agrees.”
Innovative and unique
Having gone on sale last September, the Renault Twingo is arguably the most innovative new city car on the market at the moment, thanks to its unusual powertrain layout which is unique in its sector.
Having its engine at the back of the car with a rear-wheel layout allows the Twingo to be compact and spacious, but also incredibly fun to drive and easy to steer as well.
Despite its small size, it still has a boot capacity of 219 litres, which can expand to a massive 980 litres with the rear seats folded down, and it also features excellent crash protection in an accident.
Available to buy from Perrys Renault dealerships now, prices for the new Renault Twingo start from only £9,495 for the entry-level Expression model.
