Peugeot RCZ named best diesel sports car

The Peugeot RCZ coupe has picked up another accolade after it was named best sports car by DieselCar Magazine for its 2014 Car of the Year awards.

DieselCar Awards

The winners of this year’s DieselCar Awards were decided by a panel of experienced writers and judges who have tested more than 200 new diesel-powered vehicles over the past year. For the fifth year in a row, the judges of the DieselCar Awards have decided to present its best sports car award to the Peugeot RCZ, which was last restyled back in 2013.

The Editor of DieselCar Magazine, Ian Robertson, commented: “The Peugeot RCZ offers a rewarding driving experience, agile handling and a well sorted ride, and frugal diesel power. It really is the icing on the cake for the sexily styled sports coupe.”

Currently the RCZ range features one single diesel engine, a 2.0-litre HDi mated with a six-speed manual gearbox. The diesel produces 161bhp and it allows the RCZ to go from a standstill to 60mph in 8.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 137mph.

The diesel is also the most efficient engine in the current RCZ line-up. It returns an average fuel economy of 54mpg and CO2 emissions are recorded at just 135g/km – highly respectable figures for a sports car.

The RCZ’s diesel engine is available with both the basic ‘Sport’ trim as well as the more advanced ‘GT’ trim model. The diesel engine is also available with the very recently introduced ‘Red Carbon’ trim – a limited edition model with just 300 units being made.

Pricing for the diesel-powered Peugeot RCZ currently starts at £23,950 for the 2.0 HDi Sport. The GT trim version is priced at £26,350 and the Red Carbon diesel model is priced at £27,850.

Petrol Powered Engines

The other engines in the current RCZ range are all petrol-powered. They include a 1.6-litre THP petrol with outputs of 154bhp and 197bhp and a 2.0-litre THP for the RCZ R which delivers 266bhp.

Not only is the two-door Peugeot RCZ both fast and very stylish, it also has a practical disposition, able to fold its rear seats to reveal a cavernous boot space.

The RCZ can hold 384 litres as standard in the boot, while folding the rear seats increases the load capacity to an impressive 760 litres. These figures comfortably exceed the amount of load space offered with many current coupe rivals.

Standard equipment for the Peugeot RCZ range includes a CD/radio player, cruise control, electric windows, climate control and parking sensors.
