The compact supermini was the best-selling car of 2012 and is one of the longest-running models in terms of production on UK roads so it is no surprise to see it at the top of the charts, according to car insurance quotes expert MoneySupermarket.
Ford Fiesta models sit in first, seventh and ninth in the top ten most popular cars in the UK with the mid-range Zetec trim topping the pile.
The Ford Fiesta Zetec is the most popular trim level because it offers a compromise between higher prices at the top of the range and lower levels of equipment at the entry point.
Available in three- and five-door hatchback, the Ford Fiesta Zetec tops the charts ahead of several other Ford models including the Ford Focus Zetec, Ford Focus LX, Ford Ka and Ford Focus Ghia in the top five most popular cars in the UK.
In fact, the only non-Ford cars to make it in to the top ten list were the Peugeot 206 LX and two other long-running cars; the Renault Clio Dynamique 16V and the Volkswagen Golf GT TDI.
There are now over 35 million vehicles in the UK and 80 per cent of these were cars. This makes Ford the most visible brand up and down UK roads, according to the latest government data.
The introduction of a new 2013 Ford Fiesta and the 2012 launch of the new Ford Focus means the US brand has two new versions of its best-sellers as it hopes to continue its dominance on these shores.
Ford is also boosted by the popularity of its vans. The iconic Ford Transit van has been the best-seller in the UK for over 45 years since the first models rolled off the production line at Ford’s Southampton facility.
Vans make up nearly ten per cent of all vehicles on the UK roads and the Ford Transit is by far the most popular.
The Ford Transit 350 LWB TD is the most popular van in the UK ahead of its main rival, the Mercedes Sprinter 311 CDI LWB. However, four other entries into the top ten most popular vans in the UK are from the Transit range with short- and medium-wheelbase versions also making the list along with a rear-wheel drive model.
However, Mercedes has a Sprinter van in fourth place and another in ninth while the Vauxhall Combo 1700 CDTI also makes an appearance in the list in seventh position.
Other vehicles on UK roads include 1.3 million motorcycles (3.7 per cent of all vehicles), 169,000 buses, nearly half a million heavy goods vehicles and 666,000 ‘other’ vehicles including quadricycles.
The most popular motorcycle on the road is the Honda MBX 80 FWDF but a diverse list also includes a Yamaha FZS, Suzuki LJ, Triumph Daytona, BSA Gold SR and bikes from Kawasaki, Labretta, Harley Davidson and Aprilia.
