The Ford EcoSport joins the recently-launched Ford Kuga SUV, as Ford builds on its SUV heritage with plans to sell one million SUVs in Europe over the next six years. Ford also plans to bring to Europe the next generation Ford Edge, a larger and more premium utility vehicle popular in the U.S. and other markets.
In comparison the Ecosport is smaller than both the Kuga and Edge, as it is based on the wheelbase of the Ford Fiesta, a supermini which has proven very popular in the UK market over the past few years alone.
The Ford Ecosport represents the first Ford global model to be developed entirely in South America. Originally introduced in 2003, the mini-SUV has gone on to sell more than 700,000 units in the region.
The new generation model was launched in Brazil in September last year and is expected to help drive further growth for Ford in both India and China after being introduced in those markets later this year.
Under the manufacturer’s simplified ‘One Ford’ product strategy the Ecosport is now prepared to impress motorists in Europe, as the mini-SUV will challenge other compact crossovers such as the Peugeot 2008 and the Nissan Juke.
The Ford Ecosport will offer a range of efficient powertrains, including the 118bhp 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine, which has previously been named International Engine of the Year.
Other highlights of the Ecosport include the onboard gadgets such as SYNC, Ford’s voice-activated in-car connectivity system. For the first time in Europe, the Ford SYNC AppLink feature will allow drivers voice control over mobile apps while on the move, including apps such as the leading music streaming service Spotify.
With Ford SYNC the Ecosport will also provide emergency assistance by directly connect the passengers to local emergency services operators after an accident.
The Ford Ecosport also will offer a comprehensive package of protective driving assits including Electronic Stability Control and a Hill Launch Assist.
The Ford Ecosport is expected to go on sale in European markets including the UK near the end of 2013, with pricing starting in a region of £14,000.
When it launches in Britain, motorists will be able to get their hands on a new Ford Ecosport from Perrys Ford Dealerships found in Aylesbury and High Wycombe.
