The award is one of the most prestigious in the automotive industry, and is decided by a panel of motoring journalists from 23 different countries.
Seven finalists are typically chosen on an annual basis, but eight have been chosen this year because of a dead-heat between two of the vehicles. The award is to crown ‘the most outstanding new car to go on sale in the [last] 12 months’.
The winner will be announced at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show on 4 March, with the B-Max a serious contender against other affordable, practical rivals such as the Renault Clio and the Peugeot 208.
The Ford B-Max has a number of key technological features though that set it apart from the other cars on the list. Most prominent is the car’s rear-sliding door technology, which gives owners an incredible opening space of 1.5 metres.
The B-Max also features some of the manufacturer’s most efficient fuel trains, including the 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine, which is currently International Engine of the Year 2012.
The B-Max also features the manufacturer’s critically-acclaimed SYNC connectivity technology. Ford SYNC is voice-activated and allows users to connect their mobile phones and MP3 players to the B-Max.
Ford SYNC also includes Emergency Assist, which can alert a local authority of a driver’s position in case an accident should ever occur.
The Ford B-Max is relatively new to the market, with Ford announcing the car saw 1,109 registrations in November, with more than 1,000 models sold within its first six weeks.
A new Ford B-Max is currently available from £12,995 on-the-road.
