Top ten convertibles for 2012

Believe it or not, convertibles are very popular in the UK, even though we don’t get that much sunshine.

Manufacturers tend to aim their convertibles at the UK market and as a result there are usually plenty of good examples to choose from.

There are many convertibles out on the market now, some old some new. They also come in many different types that ultimately span cross a range of market segments, from city cars to coupes.

The Fiat 500 is well known in the industry has being the stylish city car option and the 500C version adds even more style with a canvas convertible roof.

As well as adding a soft top roof the 500C retains all of the classic design features and versatility of the original 500 model including its retro design and highly customisable interior and exterior.

The 500C also gains the frugal TwinAir engine range that offers a small two-cylinder 0.9-litre petrol engine which delivers CO2 emissions as little as 95g/km. Even though this engine is small it still delivers a top speed of 108mph.

Renault Wind

The Renault Wind is a two seat convertible that boasts a stylish sporty exterior and a roof that folds in just 12 seconds.

The Wind is quite a small car as it is largely based on the Twingo city car, but it is nevertheless delivers in terms of fun-to-drive experience and performance.

It offers both 1.2-litre and 1.6-litre petrol engines, the latter delivering 131bhp and a top speed of 125mph.

Its convertible roof also comes with the added convenience of the fact that when folded away it doesn’t affect boot space.

Chevrolet Camaro convertible

The Chevrolet Camaro muscle car continues its stylish reputation with the convertible model.

Any car enthusiast will know of the legacy of the Camaro and how its burly exterior is admired everywhere. But the Camaro isn’t just stylish on the outside as its interior comes well equipped and with plenty of storage space.

The Camaro convertible uses a powerful 6.2-litre V8 engine that delivers 432bhp. The Camaro also delivers sporty responsive handling to match.

Peugeot 207 CC

The Peugeot 207 CC echoes similar design features to the Peugeot RCZ coupe but in a much smaller supermini size package.

Vauxhall Astra Twintop

This convertible is based on the popular small family car the Astra.

As a result it offers the same classy design as the hatchback version but with the ability to switch into a roadster when the sun comes out.

The TwinTop’s stowage system for its roof is useful as it can be moved to allow greater access to its boot.

As the Astra TwinTop is a convertible is goes up against models like the Mazda MX-5. However, the TwinTop is more of a functional convertible as opposed to a speedy roadster.

Range Rover Evoque – future convertible

Following the success of the Range Rover Evoque’s sales and accolades, rumour has it that there is a new convertible model in the pipeline as a version of the model was unveiled at this year’s Geneva Motor Show in March.

The convertible concept includes similar style features as the Evoque coupe with an eight-inch dual view touch screen, leather seats and 21″ Titan alloy wheels. It also includes a convertible canvas roof.

It is rumoured that the Evoque convertible will be on sale in the UK at some point in 2012.
