The large family car, which is set to be replaced by a newer version next year, was named the best car for the family as part of the awards to find the best cars on sale in the UK today.
An update to the Ford Mondeo, which comes in hatchback and estate guises, means it can still compete with newer rivals, according to Chas Hallett, What Car? editor-in-chief.
He said: “The Ford Mondeo has plenty of fresh rivals, but it’s such a strong package that it picks up two more awards this year, for best estate car and top family car. Ford has worked hard to keep the Mondeo refreshed and it has succeeded; this is still a great all-round package, either as a hatchback or an estate.”
However, judges singled out the Ford Mondeo in Zetec trim level, the second of four specifications comprising Edge, Zetec, Titanium and Titanium X, as the outstanding model in the Ford Mondeo range.
Ford Mondeo Zetec models come with dual-zone air conditioning, cruise control, 16″ alloy wheels, front fog lights as standard.
It also comes with a CD/radio, Bluetooth and leather highlights to the steering wheel and gear knob.
What Car? praised the 1.6-litre TDCi 115PS as the best engine for the hatchback because it offers up to 65mg in fuel economy and CO2 emissions of just 114g/km – meaning free first year road tax in the UK.
The 2.0-litre TDCi 140PS was named the most impressive engine for the Ford Mondeo Estate Zetec and even picked up a second award for Best Estate for the second consecutive year.
The Ford Mondeo is available from £17,795 on-the-road fron UK Ford dealerships with a selection of petrol and diesel engines including the ultra-efficient EcoBoost petrol option and the greenest in the range, the Duratorq diesel with start-stop technology.
