Seat joins winter tyre bandwagon

The Spanish car maker has delivered winter tyres to its dealerships across the country and will be hosting a campaign to showcase the benefits of winter tyres.

The UK has experiences two harsh winters in a row with snow and ice covering much of the country last year.

This year is expected to be no different and the number of people using winter tyres, which are compulsory in many European countries, will increase according to many manufacturers.

Winter tyres are designed to perform in temperatures below seven degrees Celsius. As these temperatures, normal tyres harden and become less capable of gripping the road.

The compound used in winter tyres is designed to prevent this and as a result the car is less likely to lose traction in winter weather. The tread is also deeper to prevent the car from aqua planning in wet conditions.

Nigel Griggs, Head of Aftersales at SEAT UK explained: “The value of winter tyres really cannot be overestimated.

“The time to act is now, and Seat dealers are fully prepared to help owners choose not only exactly the right winter tyre for their vehicle but also to handle the fitting process and even suggest transport options for their summer tyres.”

Seat dealerships will advise on winter tyres for the full Seat range. This includes the popular Seat Ibiza supermini and the Seat Leon hatchback.

Other Seat cars such as the Seat Exeo saloon and Seat Exeo Estate and the Seat Altea are also available with winter tyres this year.

Stuart Jackson, chairman of TyreSafe, which is running a campaign to encourage winter tyre take up, added: ‘For any driver concerned about their safety on the road during the winter, our advice is simple: winter weather tyres are the safest option.”
