The EcoBoost engine, notable for it being the first three-cylinder to be built by the car maker, has been described as a ‘significant addition’ to the B-Max range because of its small size and relatively high performance.
In fact, Ford says the engine is as powerful as a four-cylinder engine with the added benefit of improved fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions.
"No one has ever built a three-cylinder engine quite like this. It’s one of the most technically advanced and efficient engines we’ve ever designed," Joe Bakaj, vice president of Global Powertrain Engineering. "The new engine introduces many new technologies that could be part of the DNA of future Ford engines.”
Designed in the UK at Ford’s research facility in Dunton, the engine announcement is the first glimpse at the powertrains to be used with the new Ford B-Max.
The small five-seat people carrier was revealed in March this year at the Geneva Motor Show. It’s design includes sliding side doors and the lack of a B-Pillar for easier access and visibility.
The engine will be just one of a selection offered with the Ford B-Max, but Ford also has plans to use the engine as part of its future green technology.
The small size of the engine means it could be used as part of a hybrid powertrain set for inclusion in the Ford C-Max range in 2013.
Together with a newly developed electronic continuously variable transmission (e-CVT) designed specifically with hybrid vehicles in mind, the new EcoBoost engine will form the backbone of Ford’s hybrid strategy.
Derrick Kuzak, Ford’s group vice president of Global Product Development, said: “In the last five years, we have made a record investment in new powertrains and fuel-saving technologies. Today we have the freshest powertrain line-up in the industry. And there is plenty more coming.”
