Based on the Dodge Journey, the seven-seat model is expected to replace the Multipla in the Fiat line-up. However, a decision on whether it will be sold in the UK has not taken place yet.
The styling owes a lot to its routes in the US-based firm, with a chunky front end and large, domineering grille.
The Fiat Freemont will feature the longest wheelbase in its category (2.89m) to fit in three rows of seats. The third row can be folded flat to create extra storage space and the doros open to 90 degrees to allow easier loading.
All models will be generously equipped with triple-zone climate control system, keyless entry, cruise control and tyre pressure monitoring system.
Only two specification levels will be offered and the higher of the two will offer 17" alloy wheels, touchscreen radio with 8.4" screen (entry level versions get a smaller screen), rear parking sensors, fold-down mirrors, darkened rear windows and roof bars.
Under the skin, the Freemont will feature front wheel drive with two versions of the 2.0-litre Multijet in 140 and 170hp derivations matched to a manual gearbox.
Later, Chrysler’s 3.6-litre petrol V6 is expected to be added to the range, and along with the larger of the two diesels, will be available in a 4×4 version with an automatic gearbox.
As expected with a large MPV, Electronic Stability Control is featured as standard. Anti-lock braking system, Brake Assist, Hill-Holder and seven-airbags are all included on both specifications.
The Fiat Freemont will be revealed for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2010 before its debut in the US market later this year.
