While it may sound like an idea more suited to April Fool’s Day, Vauxhall claims the tyre covers will offer more grip in ice and snow than a winter tyre.
The tyre covers, priced from £50 and able to fit all types of Vauxhall car, will even last several years, says Sophie Thomas, Vauxhall Accessories Manager.
"With so many of us caught out by the big freeze last year, it is important to be better prepared for whatever this winter will throw at us," she said. "If we need to make it home from work, get to the train station or pick the kids up from school after a sudden change to icy conditions, Snow Socks are a perfect solution."
The textured fabric of the snow socks sticks to dry snow and ice, creating friction and allowing the car to grip the road in poor conditions.
Vauxhall says the snow socks could reduce the £395 million paid out to motorists each year for accidental damage caused by slippery roads.
Marketed as ‘less cumbersome than snow chains and more effective than winter tyres on ice and snow’, the covers are designed to slip over the wheel whenever there is wintry weather.
The snow socks are also approved by TUV, the global safety standards organisation based in Germany.
However, they can only be used at speeds up to 50mph, but Vauxhall advises speeds much slower in poor conditions. Vauxhall also warns motorists they are intended to be limited to vital journeys only.
The UK is expected to be hit by winter weather over the next week, with several parts of the country experiencing the first snowfall of the year.
