Released at the start of August – three months before the full production launch – the diesel model quickly sold out, leading the manufacturer to announce 300 all-wheel drive Kia Sportage First Edition petrol models will be sold from October.
The petrol Sportage will use Kia’s new Theta-II 2.0-petrol engine with a five-speed manual transmission. This means power will be 161bhp with 194Nm of torque at 4,600rpm.
The popular five-seat SUV crossover will offer a top speed of 113mph and a 0-60mph sprint time of 10.3 seconds as well as the off-road ability and on-road grip associated with 4×4 cars.
Priced at £19,495 on-the-road – £1,200 more than the diesel version – the petrol model is offered in a single, similar specification level.
The highly-specced First Edition features sporty 18" alloy wheels and LED daytime running lights and customers get the choice of Clyde Blue, Phantom Black, Silver Storm and Techno Orange metallic paint.
The interior includes black leather upholstery and a range of gadgets including climate control, cruise control and a colour rear parking camera system in the rear view mirror. Entertainment is provided by a sound system with Bluetooth connectivity.
Michael Cole, Managing Director of Kia Motors (UK) Ltd., said: "From the moment we announced the all-new Sportage our dealers were under siege from new and existing customers who wanted to be among the first to get hold of this exciting car.
"But it was clear that many wanted a petrol option – so we are very happy to have secured 300 units to meet that demand."
The petrol Kia Sportage will be joined in November by the full range and specifications of the crossover. This includes two-wheel drive versions and a range of new engines.
A smaller 1.6-litre GDi will be available as well as a 1.7-litre Turbo-diesel when the full range of engines is introduced.
Cole added: ""We will not have too long to wait for the full range of new Sportage – but such is the excitement about new Sportage that we simply couldn’t disappoint those customers who wanted First Edition but with a petrol engine."
The Kia Sportage First Edition petrol version can be ordered now, with deliveries taking place in October.
