Jaguar introduces armour-plated XJ

Designed to resemble a standard Jaguar XJ as much as possible, the Kevlar-protected luxury saloon is capable of withstanding armour piercing bullets, grenades and blasts of up to 15kg of TNT in close proximity to the vehicle.

Jaguar is aiming the vehicle at governments, security organisations and private individuals and even offers a bespoke service to add additional security features.

However, the XJ Sentinel has been designed to be ‘discreet’ and a range of body colours are available to allow the armour-plated vehicle to blend into regular traffic.

The XJ Sentinel is powered by a 5.0-litre AJ-V8 Gen III direct-injection petrol engine delivering 385PS and matched to a six speed automatic transmission.

Jaguar has used lightweight aluminium for the body wherever possible, but the added weight of the armour plating means a 0-62mph time of 9.7 seconds is the limit for the luxury saloon.

Due to the extra weight, Jaguar has tuned the suspension system and added the high performance brakes from the supercharged non-armoured XJ model.

While the emphasis is on protection and safety – the car includes all of the standard safety equipment featured on the standard Jaguar XJ – the interior includes luxurious leather upholstery and as it is based on the long wheelbase version, extra leg room.

The car is capable of carrying a 500kg payload and seat four adults in comfort in what Jaguar calls an ‘elegant and contemporary’ cabin.

Mike O’Driscoll, Managing Director of Jaguar, said: "The XJ Sentinel is the ultimate armoured luxury limousine. It offers governments, security organisations and private individuals, the highest level of security, with advanced design, refined performance and a beautifully-crafted cabin. The XJ Sentinel will be the vehicle of choice for the most discerning,”

Any owners of the XJ Sentinel can take advantage of a support programme which includes driver training and on-site servicing under the three year 50,000 mile factory warranty.
