In the 1960s Mazda decided to put a major engineering effort into the development of the Wankel rotary engine as a way of differentiating itself from other automobile manufacturers.
The Wankel engine powered the iconic Mazda RX8 allowing the sports car to rev a lot higher.
This was due to how parts, where designed, to rotate consistently around the crankshaft, unlike the common reciprocating engine.
