The larger saloon from Hyundai is named the i40. Here, motoring journalist, Tim Barnes-Clay, drives it in its estate form – known as the ‘Tourer’.
I’m rather happy with the i40 Tourer. Sure, it’s not perfect, but it continues to highlight the great work Hyundai – and the Korean car industry – is doing right now. And there are many reasons why you should consider one. For a start, the i40 is practical, which is crucial in an estate car. Hyundai has created a large space for people to load their belongings – 553-litres with the rear seats up, and a whopping 1,719-litres with them folded down. There’s also good space for passengers, with leg and head room aplenty – a benefit of a larger car.
If the sensible stuff gets your attention, the sleek styling will only sweeten the deal. Hyundai is going about its designs in a confident way. There’s nothing shouty about the firm’s cars, but there’s a gentle, subtle feeling of inner strength that comes from being ‘on form’. The interior is much the same, discarding any thoughts of showing off for the sake of it. Instead, it offers a well-laid out cabin that any driver will feel very comfortable in.
So, all it needs to do is drive well then? Pretty much. Though the i40 is a little underpowered for my liking, the 1.7-litre turbo diesel I had on test at least returned an impressive mpg – 60.1 officially – and the ride is very comfortable. You must work it hard to get the Tourer moving quickly, but it’s not really the car for that anyway. I think Hyundai has judged it well, even if an engine with a little more than 141PS would be welcome.
The i40 Tourer is a good bet if you need a family car that’s capacious, comfy and down-to-earth. It’s stylish, well made, and comes with a long warranty. It might not set your pants on fire, but it will go about its business quietly and efficiently, and I think you’ll grow to love it.
