The last few years have seen Korean cars become more popular. Indeed, the motoring industry has dished out high praise to the models that have fuelled this boost. Motoring journalist, Tim Barnes-Clay reports on one such car – the Hyundai i30 Tourer.


One of these popular cars from the Far East is the Hyundai i30, and in this Tourer body I guess I can call it a sensible small estate car.


First off, it’s pretty, isn’t it? This is a stylishly shaped car that doesn’t go too heavy on the aggressive, angular trends that are prevalent in the modern motoring world. Instead, it tries to be confidently pretty, and I like that a lot.


The 1.4-litre 140PS turbo petrol engine, on test here, gives a good balance of power and efficiency. It’s a well-judged engine that’s going to be a solid option for people who don’t have a high annual mileage, or just prefer petrol as their power source. Behave well and you might just see 50+mpg from it, but as the engine isn’t overly powerful you might have to work it quite hard if you want to make progress. 62mph takes over nine seconds to reach, which isn’t bad at all, but equally won’t get you overexcited.



The biggest plus point to the i30 Tourer is the practicality. There’s just enough room for four adults and 602-litres of boot space is available for luggage, too. If you don’t need the rear seats, this goes up to an impressive 1,650-litres. Meanwhile, in the front, the driver will find a comfortable cabin with good supportive seating and well laid out controls. It’s obvious from spending a bit of time with the i30 Tourer that Hyundai really thinks about its drivers. What’s more, it’s a cockpit that’s up there with anything the Japanese manufacturing powerhouses, like Toyota and Nissan, produce.


It’s difficult imagining anybody being disappointed with the i30 Tourer. This is 21st Hyundai – a confident, accomplished, quality manufacturer in the middle of a Golden Age for Korean car production. Perhaps the only thing you can accuse it of is being a bit underpowered, but that’s something that can easily be solved in the future. Hyundai is on a roll.
