Hyundai Motor UK will become the Official Vehicle Supplier to the elite cycling team, Team Wiggins, for 2016.
Sir Bradley Wiggins
Team Wiggins was founded by Sir Bradley Wiggins – seven-time Olympic medallist and the first Briton to win the Tour de France – last year and this deal will see a fleet of five Hyundai vehicles used by the team throughout the 2016 season.
The fleet will consist of two i40 Tourers, two modified Santa Fe SUVs and an iLoad van. Each of the Hyundai models will be used to support the team throughout the extensive training and racing schedule it has planned for 2016, including at the Tour of Britain, Tour de Yorkshire and other races in Europe.
The two i40s will be used to carry equipment, supplies, team members and, most important of all, the official team bikes. The i40s will be the most visible of the fleet, as they will play the crucial role of the support car behind the peloton on race days, carrying spare bikes, food and other vital supplies for the competing riders.
Santa Fe SUVs
Other support staff, including technicians and team members, will have use of two modified Santa Fe SUVs. Both the Santa Fe cars and the i40 Tourers will come in generously equipped Premium trim, meaning the team will benefit from a selection of in-car technology – including heated front and rear leather seats and sat-nav – to make long days following the peloton easier and more comfortable.
The final vehicle, the Hyundai iLoad van, will be used to transport larger equipment and team luggage between the various stages of the races around the world. As part of the agreement, Hyundai will document Team Wiggins’ training and races through its own social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram.
Hyundai’s marketing director David Pugh, said: “Team Wiggins is an innovative team that has already achieved great things in its first year of competing and Hyundai is very proud indeed to be supporting them for 2016. Dedication, innovation and perseverance are key attributes of Team Wiggins and its founder, Sir Bradley Wiggins. That sporting ethos is one shared by Hyundai and we’re privileged to be supporting the legacy of such a British icon. The long and demanding days of endurance racing will be a great test for our vehicles, and we look forward to showcasing their abilities behind the peloton.”
Sir Bradley Wiggins said: “We’re all chuffed to be working with a world-class brand like Hyundai. They’re a great fit for Team Wiggins as it’s a global company with a really positive spirit and attitude. The boys and I are hoping for a great year ahead on the professional cycling tour. The diversity of the Hyundai cars we have at our disposal means we’re 100 per cent ready for the demands of the race schedule, be it on the tight Yorkshire lanes or down the streets of London for the Tour of Britain.”
The deal starts this month with the option to continue into the 2017 season. Hyundai will join existing sponsors including Rapha and Pinarello in supporting the team towards what we all hope will be a successful season.
