Whether you define ‘status’ as luxurious design, celebrity ownership or unbridled performance, 2015 has been a standout year for car designers the world over. Amongst a whole host of contenders, offerings from Ford, Jaguar, Land Rover and Mazda have made our final shortlist of ‘Status Cars of 2015’ for excellence in their field, having scooped up a whole host of awards at prestigious ceremonies throughout the year.
Here’s our run down of the top cars released in 2015 that are sure to turn heads.
Ford Mustang 2015
Ford’s Mustang is synonymous with all-American muscle. The car was unveiled to the public as the Mustang II in 1964, and has since become a star of the track as well as the screen, winning numerous drag and sports car races as well as featuring in two James Bond films (Goldfinger and Diamonds Are Forever) and rhythm and blues classic Mustang Sally.
The 2015 incarnation is a re-styled animal with innovative driver technology to help tame the V8 beast beneath. Instantly recognisable for its bullish looks, the Mustang 2015 can crank up to 62mph in just 4.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 164mph. Vast improvements have been made to the handling and eco-credentials of the model, a combination that has seen it shortlisted for World Car of the Year, and has had our car enthusiast blogger, James, raving about the new UK-sold right-hand drive model.
Jaguar XJ 2015
The Jaguar XJ has been the epitome of British luxury since its advent in 1968, establishing itself amongst the finest models to roll off the Coventry production line. The last of the brand be designed under the legendary pencil of company founder Sir William Lyons, the car still features amongst the official rides of the Prime Minister and royal family.
Jaguar’s 2015 model has taken a lead from German saloon manufacturers, lightening the structure and improving handling whilst keeping much of its class-leading classic opulence. Under the bonnet, the supercharged V6 generates a hefty 340bhp at just 27mpg, enabling you to eat up those motorway miles with comfort and a clear conscience.
Land Rover Range Rover 2015
The Range Rover is the most elegant offering from Solihull-based makers Land Rover, the brand so long relied on by the British military, farmers and wealthy land owners. However, the original 1970 version put 4×4 versatility ahead of comfort, enabling it to be deployed both in war zones and by the emergency services.
The SUV may now be by-word for Chelsea tractors and hip hop stars, but it still maintains enough integrity for one to be stored in the Queen’s garage. The Range Rover 2015 is equally adept on or off the road, with advanced Terrain Response technology and acres of sumptuous cabin space. The car’s ruggedness has now translated into safety, with the latest edition being awarded a 5-star NCAP rating as well as the Autocar Star Award.
Mazda MX-5 2015
Having debuted in 1989, the Mazda MX-5 is the most recent offering on our list of status cars. However, this affordable roadster has collected enough accolades in its short life to more than make up for it. At a price that’s hard to beat, the car has found itself coming out top in its class, surpassing competitors such as the Alfa Romeo Spider and Lotus Elan.
Mazda have put driving experience at the forefront of the latest edition, reducing the weight further and fine-tuning the engine for greater performance. The MX-5 2015 keeps the fluid aesthetic that has set it apart from its competitors, whilst integrating a whole heap of technology (such as the SkyActive system) to add sophistication to raw power.
