The Ford Mondeo has been named the best petrol-powered towing car by a panel of experts at this year’s Tow Car Awards.
Ran in conjunction with the Camping and Caravanning Club, Practical Caravan and What Car? magazine, the Awards assessed a total of 37 different cars to name its winners this year.
The team of well-seasoned motoring experts then put each model through a gruelling series of tests and challenges in order to find out which was top of its class when it came to pulling loads.
Best petrol car out of 37 entries!
Ride and handling were assessed by the judges, along with the car’s ability to tow heavy weight behind it, along with other important criteria like practicality for regular driving.
Of all the cars with petrol engines assessed as part of the Awards, the new Mondeo came out on top thanks to its smooth and economical 1.5-litre turbocharged EcoBoost petrol engine.
David Motton, Practical Caravan’s Tow Car editor, said: “Ford’s EcoBoost engine really is a star.
“It may not have as much pulling power as the diesel equivalent but, with 240Nm of torque, it’s noticeably stronger in the middle of the rev range than most petrols. But at the same time it’s also a lot easier on the ears than most diesels.”
Anthony Ireson, Ford UK marketing director, said: “EcoBoost is another gem in our freshest-ever vehicle range, which we are delighted that towing experts have recognised in the fast-selling new Mondeo.”
The new Ford Mondeo range features a range of power and body options, including a choice of petrol, diesel or hybrid powertrains, plus a choice of either saloon or estate bodystyles.
What’s more, the Mondeo is also available with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive for extra on-road grip, while a retractable tow car with Trailer Sway Control function can be specified optionally.
Back in February, the Mondeo was also named the Best Family Car at the UK Car of the Year Awards, beating its long-time rival, the BMW 3 Series.
Ford Mondeo ‘better than the BMW 3 Series’
What’s more, industry valuation experts CAP Automotive last year predicted that the Ford Mondeo would also hold its value better than even the most prestigious of luxury German brands.
Dylan Setterfield, head of forecasting at CAP, said: “The new Mondeo is anything but ordinary and its sheer good looks are a big contributor to such strong expected value retention as a used car in three years.”
The new Ford Mondeo is available to buy from Perrys Ford dealerships now, with prices starting from only £19,995.
