There’s just 100 days left until Euro 6 emissions-compliant new cars become mandatory across all of Europe, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
From September 1st this year, all new cars sold in the UK must be compliant with Euro 6 standards, which will introduce new regulations for both petrol and diesel cars.
Introduced to reduce the amount of dangerous emissions given off by engines, the new regulations will reduce the permitted amount of NOx to a maximum of 80mg/km for diesel engines and 60mg/km for petrol.
Cleaner engines to reduce pollution
In addition to that, the new engines will be the most clean ever manufactured, with the lowest CO2 emissions on record and particulate matter emissions of virtually zero.
According to the SMMT figures, buyers are already picking up on the benefits of the new engines, with almost half of new cars registered in April coming with next-generation Euro 6 technology.
Mike Hawkes, chief executive of the SMMT, said: “With 100 days still to go until the new Euro-6 standard becomes mandatory, new car buyers are shifting to these next-generation vehicles.
“This is the result of huge investment from manufacturers in clean technology – and the quicker we get these Euro-6 cars onto the roads, the quicker we’ll see improvements in air quality.”
In preparation for the new standards, Ford has updated its top-selling Fiesta range with a reworked version of the Fiesta Econetic, making it the most fuel-efficient version ever sold.
Returning 88.3mpg with CO2 emissions of only 82g/km courtesy of a 1.5-litre diesel engine, the new Fiesta Econetic now emits 16g/km less CO2 that the first version launched back in 2008.
New Euro 6 compliant cars available now
The new Econetic model also gets subtle extra bodywork and aerodynamic features to decrease wind resistance, along with low-rolling resistance tyres and a revised five-speed gearbox.
Ford has also updated other models in the Fiesta range too, with the Zetec S model now available with the same sporty 138bhp Ecoboost engine as in the Fiesta Red and Black edition models.
LED daytime running lights are now standard on all versions above the Style trim, while the option of two new colours in the form of Magnetic metallic grey and Candy Red metallic are also available.
