With just a few short months to go until the new Mazda MX-5 lands in dealerships, Mazda thought it was a good idea to pit it against the model that started it all.
The head-to-head face off comes in celebration of the MX-5’s 25th anniversary, showing off exactly what’s made it one of the most iconic roadsters in the world, and it makes for compelling viewing.
Battle of old vs new
From handling to its fun-to-drive personality, the MX-5 continues to be just as popular as it was a quarter of a century ago, becoming the top-selling two-seater roadster in the world.
On paper, the new MX-5 clearly has an advantage in terms of power, available with a 2.0-litre engine that produces either 129bhp or 158bhp, while the original has a 1.6-litre engine with only 114bhp.
What’s more, the newest model also features a wide range of new tweaks, including a specially-engineered chassis to make the most use of the MX-5’s low and nimble on-road stance.
Endurance racer Jade Paveley took the wheel of the original 1990 MX-5, while fellow racer Owen Mildenhall got to try out the newest 2015 version on the Circuit de Calafat in Spain.
Paveley was awarded a four second head start over the new MX-5 in the interests of fairness, so was it enough for the legendary original to snatch victory from under the nose of Mazda’s latest effort?
Predictably, of course, the newest MX-5 comes out on top thanks to its superior performance and handling, but it’s still incredible to see just how well the original model holds up against it.
Far from being outstripped and outgunned on the track, the first-ever MX-5 manages to fend off its successor for most of the race, only being overtaken in the final few seconds.
Available in the UK from the summer onwards, the all-new Mazda Mx-5 will be priced between £18,495 and £23,295, meaning that it’s just as affordable as ever.
That’s not to say it’s cheap on the inside, however, as it comes packed with a full range of modern kit including LED lights and a smartphone-compatible radio/CD player as standard.

Higher trim levels also receive luxury features like a touchscreen sat-nav infotainment system, cruise control, larger wheels and heated leather seats, plus parking sensors and blind spot monitoring.
