Next Nissan GT-R will use same engine as 1250bhp Le Mans racer

The next Nissan GT-R will likely use the same V6 engine as in the manufacturer’s 1250bhp LMP1 Le Mans race car, according to engineers.

Ben Bowlby, the engineer behind the insane LMP1 prototype, told Top Gear that the twin-turbo V6 will more than likely be making an appearance in the next-gen version of the popular GT-R.

“Highly applicable to the road”

Explaining why the racing engine is the ideal choice for Nissan’s flagship sports model, he said: “The 3.0-litre V6 is a sort of god-child of the true, road-going GT-R.

“It’s a direct injection engine, and the combustion technology, and integration of turbo and intake system within the head design, is all very interesting and highly applicable to the road.”

“If it was a crazy engine, super light with a short life,” he added, “the reality is that it wouldn’t be applicable. But it revs to the same as the road-going car – 6,500rpm – and is truly an early ancestor of what will be a future Nissan GT-R engine.”

The Nissan engineer also explained that the LMP1 racer has helped fast-track the development of the new engine, which has proven to be one of the most reliable components of the car.

Ben added: “We prove that you can do an incredibly efficient and very powerful engine – we have roughly the same power as the road car (around or just over 550bhp) but burn about a third of the fuel doing it.

“Actually it’s very important that things like racing do help change people’s perspective and that having a more fuel efficient car is better for the environment and less wasteful.”

What’s more, rumour has it that the new V6 engine will be matched up to a hybrid system like the LMP1 when it arrives in the next GT-R model, which is expected to appear around 2018 or so.
