Jaguar Land Rover earns Queen’s Award for sustainable development

Jaguar Land Rover has officially been honoured with a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development, thanks to the company’s effort to reduce its environmental impact.

This marks the 14th Queen’s Award that Jaguar and Land Rover have received between them since 1967, and follows on from an award it scooped last year in recognition of overseas sales growth.

14th Queen’s Award in 48 years

Dr Ralf Speth, the company’s CEO, said: “Jaguar Land Rover is honoured to receive this 2015 Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development.

“We are focused on growing a long-term, sustainable business, as leaders in environmental innovation and making a positive impact on society.”

According to Jaguar Land Rover, its 8,000 designers and engineers take a ‘whole lifecycle’ approach to creating vehicles, and aim to reduce environmental impact across all levels of the business.

Not just that, but the manufacturer is also a world leader in the design and manufacture of aluminium-intensive vehicles, which deliver lighter weight, higher fuel efficiency and lower emissions.

On top of that, Jaguar Land Rover also makes efforts to get as much use as possible out of recycled content to further reduce its carbon footprint, while large investments have been put towards the development of hybrid technology.

Significant reductions in operational energy have also been made, while the company’s new engine manufacturing centre has been specifically designed with the UK’s largest rooftop solar panel installation.

In all, the solar panels generate as much as 30 per cent of the site’s energy, while waste and water usage has also been reduced as much as possible.

The company also states that its approach also extends to the social, economic and leadership dimensions of sustainable development through training and education of its workforce.

Dr Speth said: “We have doubled our workforce in five years, developed a culture of continually increasing their skills and we are helping to inspire the next generation of engineers.”

In addition to its long list of 14 Queen’s Awards, Jaguar Land Rover is also the only automotive company to hold all three Royal Warrants, as an official supplier to HM The Queen, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and HRH The Prince of Wales.
