Mazda scoops trio of Red Dot Design Awards

Three Mazda models have officially been honoured with a trio of awards at the prestigious Red Dot Award: Product Design 2015 awards.

The all-new MX-5 roadster, along with the brand-new CX-3 compact crossover and the Mazda2 supermini have all been given accolades, which they’ll pick up at the official awards ceremony in June.

Having won the Red Dot: Best of the Best prize, the MX-5 took home the awards’ highest distinction, with only 1.6 per cent of all submissions for the awards shortlisted for the Best of the Best category.

Likewise, the CX-3 was given the award for Outstanding Design Quality, while the Mazda2 received the Honourable Mention accolade for its design, functionality and ergonomics.

Following in the path of preceding Mazda models, each of the manufacturer’s three newest models have all now won prizes in recognition of their head-turning KODO design, which has its roots in Mazda’s long-time sports car tradition.

Kevin Rice, Mazda’s European design director, said: “This recognition from Red Dot is a testimony to KODO’s flexibility and the artistic freedom it gives us.

“KODO captures the moment of pent-up energy before an athlete or animal springs into motion. One way to control the visual energy is to ‘compress’ and ‘release’ it as it moves along the body of a car, as we have done with the new MX-5.”

He added: “The new CX-3 takes a different artistic approach by blending the two main volumes of the car and creating the energy that way. The Mazda2 is different again, demonstrating how KODO helps us give each car its own individual character.”

Mazda has a long history of winning prizes at the internationally-recognised Red Dot design awards, which has previously awarded accolades to pioneering companies like Nike and Apple.

This time last year, the Mazda3 saloon was given the Red Dot Product Design award, an accolade which it shares with the Mazda6, which took home the prize in 2013.

Outside of the Red Dot awards, Mazda’s KODO design theme has been the recipient of many prizes over the years, including having been won Auto Bild’s European Design Award in 2012.
