Pre-orders are now officially open for the new Mazda MX-5, which has begun production at Mazda’s assembly line in Hiroshima, Japan.
Full pricing has yet to be released, but customers can now put down a deposit to claim one of the new MX-5 roadsters ahead of when deliveries commence in the UK later in the summer.
Officially unveiled by the Japanese manufacturer in September last year, the new fourth-generation MX-5 is the lightest, lowest and most aggressive version of the iconic two-seater produced yet.
Designed specifically to maximise driving pleasure
According to the manufacturer, the latest version has been designed specifically to maximise the MX-5’s legendary reputation for driving pleasure and the element of fun that has come to define it.
Lighter than its predecessor by 100kg, the lowered centre of gravity on the new MX-5 serves to enhance on-road responsiveness and agility, as well as improving economy figures and efficiency.
Outfitted with a slick and assertive new exterior design, which was partly developed in conjunction with Fiat, Mazda says that the new MX-5 is “people-oriented” and “optimised for open-top driving”.
Power comes via a choice of two ultra-efficient SKYACTIV petrol engines, which buyers can choose with outputs of either 129bhp or a more powerful 158bhp.
This makes the new MX-5 the first model in its history to come with Mazda’s unique fuel-saving SKYACTIV tech, while its engines are linked to a slick and easy-shifting six-speed manual gearbox.
Full specifications have yet to be announced, but the manufacturer has said that the new model will come with a more upmarket interior than outgoing models, with a range of modern kit and equipment.
The MZD Connect infotainment system, which allows drivers to access smartphone features via the in-car touchscreen or by voice command, has already been confirmed, along with a range of active and passive safety technologies.
Most successful two-seater roadster ever
Launched all the way back in 1989, the MX-5 single-handedly helped to resurrect the flagging sales of the two-seater roadster market, and has become the most successful car of its kind in history.
More than 900,000 models have been produced in the past 25 years, making the MX-5 the world’s best-selling two-seater sports car, a fact which has been officially recognised by Guinness World Records.
Earning a reputation for being one of the greatest drivers’ cars on the planet, the Mazda MX-5 has picked up more than 200 awards and accolades for its performance, reliability and enjoyability.
Recently, the MX-5 was officially crowned the most fun car at the 2014 What Car? Used Car of the Year Awards, which the judges praising the car primarily for “its ability to make the driver smile”.
