Designers create self-driving car with a built-in gym

Italian company Italdesign Giugiaro has created an amazing new luxury self-driving concept model, which comes complete with its own built-in gym.

Best known for its work on industrial design projects, Italdesign Giugiaro debuted the svelte saloon concept, which it has named the GEA, at the Geneva Motor Show last week.

The company says that the GEA was a design study intended to explore the cars of the future, taking the idea of autonomous vehicles and running with it in a uniquely opulent direction.

“Vision of luxury mobility”

Wolfgang Eggar, Italdesign Giugiaro’s head of styling, said: “GEA is not simply a car, we wanted to give shape to our vision of luxury mobility for the future”.

Along with basic gym equipment installed in the back seats, the GEA also comes with a sizeable fridge to store food and drinks, along with built-in exercise tutorial videos.

Two aluminium handles are tucked away in the back, which pop out when activated via and sensor and can be used for upper-body routines, while two floor-mounted boards can be used for leg exercises.

Designed in conjunction with fitness equipment manufacturer Technogym, the GEA also comes with a built-in monitor which displays tutorials and workout videos to encourage passengers to work out.

Other luxurious fittings include a small drawer to hold cosmetics and makeup, plus a perfumed pouch for aromatherapy, while the GEA can also create a “warmer, more relaxing atmosphere” via LED mood lighting.

Not just all play and no work, it also features a Business Mode, which turns it into a mobile office with two 19-inch screens that drop from the roof and a front passenger seat which rotates 180 degrees.

764bhp electric powertrain

Finally, it can also be used as a mobile hotel; passengers can select Dream Mode, which joins the front seats and activates a fold-out footrest to turn into a full flat bed.

LEDs project relaxing blue light, the windows darken and it even projects pictures of galaxies and stars to create the ultimate relaxing mood on the monitors.

Designed as an autonomous vehicle, the company has also made sure that the GEA has plenty of performance, and passengers can opt to take control should they want to.

Far removed from a slow automaton, the GEA features a pair of potent electric motors, generating 764bhp which allows the car to reach a top speed of 155mph, and it uses waste energy to recharge itself on the move.

Purely a concept design, it’s extremely unlikely that the Italdesign Giugiaro GEA will hit the market any time soon. Still, a driver can dream…
