Mazda’s all-new Mazda3 hatchback has triumphed in this year’s Scottish Car of the Year Awards, having been named the best family car.
As well as that, the Mazda3 with 2.2-litre diesel engine was also highly successful in the Awards’ category for diesel cars, having come in the runner up position.
Award winning model range
Continuing Mazda’s history of success at the Scottish awards, the Mazda3 is the latest model to clinch a title after the CX-5 was named safest car in 2012. The following year, the Mazda6 saloon also won an award for eco-friendliness.
This year’s family car category was one of the most hotly-contested in the history of the awards, with the Mazda3 facing off against rivals which included the Citroen C4 Cactus and Peugeot 308.
According to judges, however, the Mazda3 won for its superior design, quality and driving dynamics, while the fact that the Mazda3 made its UK debut in Scotland didn’t hurt either.
Alisdair Suttie, president of the Association of Scottish Motoring Writers, said: “Mazdas have always been a big hit with private buyers in Scotland.
“The ASMW jury believes that the new Mazda3 has the style and dynamic prowess to put the company back into the heart of this highly-competitive segment.
He added: “Both the Hatchback and Fastback models impress, the interior’s by far the best of any Mazda to date, new SKYACTIV engines deliver strong performance with low emissions, and the diesel is exceptional.”
Mazda3 one of the best cars in the world
No stranger to awards, the Mazda3 has previously set two world car awards in its sights and was also the only non German-made car to be nominated for both the World Car and World Car Design awards this year.
Earlier this year, the model also received the Red Dot design award for its stylish, modern and sleek KODO-inspired exterior, ranking Mazda along the likes of previous prize winners Nike and Apple.
The Mazda3 combines its striking KODO design with the marque’s signature SKYACTIV engineering, which maximises efficiency without compromising on performance or drivability.
Ergonomically designed from the ground up, the Mazda3 features a premium interior with a range of high-tech kit, which includes Mazda’s MZD Connect infotainment system.
Three engines are available with the model, a 99bhp 1.5-litre petrol and a 2.0-litre version available with outputs of either 118bhp or 163bhp. The frugal 2.2-litre turbodiesel option is also available, with an output of 148bhp.
Delivering high performance with high efficiency, the SKYACTIV powertrains can deliver up to 72.4mpg on the combined cycle, with CO2 emissions of just 104g/km.
Available to buy from Perrys dealerships now, the new Mazda3 is priced between £16,995 and £23,745.
