Citroen’s legendary original DS model is to soon celebrate its 60th birthday at the first London Classic Car Show in January.
One of the most advanced cars of its time, the original DS model first debuted at the Paris Motor Show in 1955, where it stunned the audience with its looks and range of then cutting-edge tech.
The impact of the Citroen DS was so immediate, that 743 orders were placed within the first 15 minutes of the opening, and by the end of the day Citroen had over 12,000 in its books.
At the time, most cars featured rear-wheel drive and ran on old-fashioned leaf springs, the DS came with front-wheel drive, self-levelling pneumatic suspension and a semi-automatic gearbox.
London Classic Car Show
Starting with the inaugural London Classic Car Show early in the New Year, the DS will then go on to appear at a number of other events throughout the year to celebrate its diamond anniversary.
The show is the latest event created by Brand Events, who have also been responsible for car shows like Top Gear Live where one of the original DS’s spiritual successors made its debut in December 2012.
Curated by TV chef James Martin and Top Gear presenter James May, the show will be held in London from the 8th January and will feature a range of car-related attractions.
Highlights will include a seminar that will explain how to invest in classic cars, plus a display of rare classic cars that will parade up and down throughout the show.
The show will also feature a lengthy homage to the DS and a range of original examples will be present, including the highly south after décapotable convertible model.
On top of that, the show will mark the debut of the DS brand as a separate brand identity from Citroen’s main models.
Other exhibits and attractions at the show will include various V12-engined supercars, plus a smattering of V8-powered American muscle cars like the new Ford Mustang, plus various historic models.
Citroen’s DS division recently unveiled a special concept model at the Paris Motor Show, the haute couture-inspired DS Divine.
Billed as “a perfect alliance between sophistication and technology”, the DS Divine features a range of unique and high-grade inclusions, with gemstone-encrusted toggle switches, Swarovski crystals and embroidery from Paris’ Maison Lesage.
Despite the fact that the DS Divine is purely a concept model, Perrys stocks a full range of Citroen’s standard range, as well as the DS models. Get in touch with your local dealership today for more information.
