Vauxhall Mokka receives engine upgrade

The Mokka compact SUV has become the latest model in Vauxhall’s lineup to get the 1.6-litre Whisper Diesel engine, after it was unveiled at this year’s Paris Motor Show.

Already available on Vauxhall’s Astra, Meriva and Zafira Tourer models, the new 134bhp engine is due to replace the 1.7-litre diesel unit currently present in the Mokka lineup.

Benefits over the outgoing engine include a power boost of 6bhp and 20Nm of torque, plus significantly lower fuel consumption figures.

Vauxhall claims that the new Whisper Diesel will take the Mokka from 0-62mph in 10.5 seconds, before going on to a top speed of 118mph.

Linked with a six-speed manual transmission and start-stop technology as standard, the engine will reportedly deliver 58.9mpg with CO2 emissions from 109g/km.

The combination of the new turbo diesel and manual transmission is offered for both front- and four-wheel drive, while a six-speed automatic is also available with front-wheel drive.

Released at the end of 2012, the Mokka is Vauxhall’s first foray into the SUV market, and has proven to be a resounding success with over 200,000 orders placed, around 36,000 of which have been from UK buyers.

Vauxhall’s engineers have worked hard to achieve class-beating values for noise generation and refinement with the new diesel engine, labelling it as the marque’s cleanest mid-sized diesel ever.

Whisper Diesel

Named the “Whisper Diesel” due to its ultra-quiet running, other firsts for the Luton carmaker include the first use of aluminium for the engine block, plus a better NOx trap to capture harmful waste gases.

Tough-looking, but with plenty of room for five occupants and all the practicality necessary for a small family, the Mokka features a sporty design and handy 362-litre boot.

Standard equipment on the small SUV includes 18-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning and steering-mounted controls, plus cruise control and DAB digital radio.

Alongside the new Whisper Diesel engine, other power options include a 138bhp 1.4-litre petrol engine, which can take the Mokka to 62mph from a standstill in just 9.9 seconds, topping out at a max speed of 120mph.

As well as that, the petrol engine also manages a combined fuel economy figure of 47.9mpg and emits just 139g/km of CO2 emissions.

The new Mokka engine with Whisper Diesel engine will be available to buy from early 2015, while prices for the Vauxhall Mokka currently start at £15,999.
