Nissan have given a major sponsorship boost to double world champion paratriathlete Melissa Reid.
Rio 2016 Paralympic Games
The carmaker supplied the 23-year old world champion with an all-new Nissan Qashqai to aid her preparations for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.
Melissa’s family will use the car to transport the Cornwall athlete, who is severely visually impaired, thousands of miles each year to numerous training sessions and competitions and will also ease the financial burden on the family, who fund Melissa’s career with minimal backing.
Allan Reid, Melissa’s dad and coach, said: “I can’t stress enough just how important having a car is for Melissa and what this support means to us all.
“Melissa has to travel to all training sessions and competitions with a tandem, which can cost up to £10,000, and we clock up thousands of miles each month.”
Car of the Year
The new Qashqai was launched in Britain earlier this year and has gathered an impressive collection of awards including the Car of the Year accolade from What Car? magazine and DieselCar magazine’s Car of the Year award.
Melissa’s partnership with the carmaker was formed through Nissan’s role as the Official Automotive Partner of Team GB and Paralympics GB to the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Tying in with this, Nissan has launched an innovative campaign, #UniteAndExcite, which will provide fans with exclusive behind-the-scenes access to the athletes’ stories and information on Nissan’s new technology.
Melissa began competing in 2011 and has since had a meteoric rise to the top of her sport, which involves a 750m swim tied to the ankle of her guide, a 20km tandem bike ride and a 5km run tied to her guide by the waist.
The sport will feature in the Paralympic Games for the first time at Rio 2016 and, as double world champion, Melissa is one of the favourites for gold.
Collecting her new car, she said: “I know that my sport puts a lot of financial pressure on my parents and so having this car makes things much easier and will allow me to focus more on my training.”
Pricing for the Nissan Qashqai starts at £17,995 for the basic entry-level Qashqai Visia.
