Ford unleash most powerful 1.0-litre Fiestas yet

Ford have revealed two new striking special edition Fiesta models, the most powerful 1.0-litre Fiestas made yet.

Fiesta Zetec S Red and Zetec S Black

The two models, the Fiesta Zetec S Red and Zetec S Black, feature an arresting two-tone colour scheme and also come with a new 138bhp version of the multi award winning 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine, which Ford say offers more power-per-litre than a Bugatti Veyron.

Available in Race Red with a Panther Black roof and detailing or Panther Black with Race Red roof and detailing, this new Fiesta pair can be ordered now and will be in dealerships from September.

John McLeod, Ford’s European Vehicle Personalisation chief designer, said: “Both cars have an execution that’s bold, distinctive and contemporary, but the Red and Black present subtly different personalities that will appeal to different customers.

“The more provocative car is the Black Edition; its red detailing and the grille surround deliver a high contrast for drivers that want to be noticed. The Red Edition car is highly expressive yet a little bit more subtle for the less exuberant owner.”

The three-door Fiestas feature front upper and lower grille surrounds, front bumper aerofoils and mirror caps in contrasting colours, with black 17-inch alloy wheels as standard.

There’s also front and rear sports bumpers, side skirts and rear roof spoilers, while the roof on each model has been painted to achieve a higher quality finish than a foil applique or sticker and both models feature a black leather steering wheel and gear lever as well as black floor mats and charcoal black sport seats all with contrasting red stitching.

If Ford’s other high-performance Fiesta model, the Fiesta ST, is anything to go by, the Red and Black editions should be a blast to drive.

EcoBoost Engine

The EcoBoost engine has been souped-up with new settings for turbocharger boost control, valve-timings, intercooler and throttle management, all of which deliver 12 per cent more power with a 0-62mph time of nine seconds and a top speed of 125 mph.

Efficiency is still more than acceptable; the new Fiestas will do 62.8 miles to the gallon while giving off 104g of CO2 per km.

Further enhancements include revised gear ratios for the five-speed manual transmission and a sport suspension set-up, as well as new shock absorber and spring settings and revised tuning for the power steering system for increased handling performance.

Compared with the Fiesta ST, the Red and Black editions are about two and a half seconds slower in the 0-62 sprint and around 40bhp less powerful.

Regardless, they still offer much better performance-per-litre with their 1.0-litre engines, as opposed to the 1.6-litre under the hood of the ST, are cheaper to tax with lower CO2 emissions and have a much better fuel efficiency.

It’s also cheaper than the ST alternative, with prices for the new Fiesta Zetec S Red and Black editions starting at £15,995 while the ST has a starting price of £16,995.
