The ever-popular Ford Fiesta has been named 2014 Car of the Year by The Telegraph.
The decision follows several months of voting by readers of The Telegraph, before a team of experts chose a worthy winner among the most popular cars voted for each category.
As well as scooping the top accolade at the 2014 Telegraph Motoring Awards, the Ford Fiesta has also managed to win in the Best Supermini category.
Explaining the decision to give the Fiesta its top prize this year, The Telegraph commented: “There is simply no small hatchback that you can buy today that’s as enjoyable to drive as the Fiesta.
“It feels wonderfully sharp and agile, which is obviously great news on a winding back road. But the Fiesta is also a pleasure on the sort of mundane journeys that most of us do every day, thanks to its beautifully weighted controls, comfortable ride and good visibility.”
The newspaper also added: “True, some bigger cars are available for the same sort of money, but the Fiesta still has space for four adults, and access to its rear seats is easy if you choose the five-door model. Throw in big discounts, a long list of standard safety kit, and strong yet efficient petrol and diesel engines, and the Fiesta really does offer the greatest good for the greatest number of people.”
Best selling new car
The Ford Fiesta has for several consecutive years now been the best selling new car in the UK market. Since the start of 2014 the Fiesta has continued this trend, achieving 49,490 new registrations after four months of the year to date. To put that figure in better perspective, the Fiesta has sold over 20,000 more new units then the rivalling Vauxhall Corsa , which is third overall for year to date sales.
The current-generation Ford Fiesta was first launched back in 2008 but the supermini has been kept fresh with major updates, including a facelift, received for the start of 2013.
Ford Fiesta engine line-up
Engines available for new Ford Fiesta models include two efficient diesel units – a 1.6-litre TDCi and a 1.5-litre TDCi. The 1.6-litre TDCi engine produces 93bhp and it is also the most frugal Fiesta engine as it will return around 85.6mpg and its CO2 emissions output measures at just 87g/km.
Also available in the Fiesta’ engine line-up is the class-leading 1.0-litre Ecoboost petrol engine with outputs of 79bhp, 99bhp or 123bhp. Capable of returning a CO2 emissions output below 100g/km, the Ecoboost is one of the most efficient petrol engines ever made. Pricing for the Ford Fiesta currently starts from just £9,995.
