Renault is reportedly working on an updated version of its Renaultsport Megane coupe, even faster than the current 261bhp model. The new model’s main target is the new SEAT Leon Cupra 280 and Renault will attempt to set a new lap record for a front-wheel drive procution car at the Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit.
Earlier this year the new SEAT Leon Cupra 280 hot hatch set a new record for quickest front-wheel drive production car around the historic 12.9-mile Nurburgring circuit. The news surprised many and in the process the SEAT surpassed the previous record which was held by the Renaultsport Megane in its 265 Trophy specification.
Impressively the SEAT Leon Cupra managed to lap the challenging Nurburgring circuit in less than eight minutes. With a lap time of seven minutes and 58.4 seconds, the SEAT Leon Cupra managed to outpace several expensive sports cars around the circuit including the Aston Martin DBS, the Audi R8 V8 and the Porsche Cayman S.
On Renaultsport’s official Facebook page an image has been posted including a ‘#Under 8’ graphic and the logos of several performance brands.
A second image posted on the Facebook page shows the lower rear of a Renaultsport car with a new performance exhaust system. This exhaust is believed to be provided by Akraprovic, a Slovenian tuning manufacturer. This same image also has the #Under8 graphic.
Now a report from Autocar suggests that Renault is plotting to launch a lighter, more aerodynamic and powerful version of its Renaultsport Megane. With this updated model Renault aims to retake the honour of having the fastest front-wheel drive production car around the Nurburgring Nordschleife.
A limited production run of this updated Renaultsport Megane is considered likely and here in Britain it could be priced from just under £30,000.
This new version of the Renaultsport Megane will also likely be far more focused for suiting track-day events compared to the standard coupe. To help it achieve considerably quicker lap times it’s rumoured the car will feature Michelin race tyres, new sportier suspension as well as a new exhaust system. More details on this updated Megane will reportedly be revealed during this summer.
The full Renault Megane range, including the Renaultsport 265 coupe, has been facelifted and received a raft of updates since the start of 2014.
Currently the Renaultsport Megane is priced from £26,930, while a performance-enhancing Cup Chassis Pack is available for an extra £1,350.
