Top cars at the 2014 Beijing Motor Show

As China is currently one of the most important markets for many car manufacturers, the Beijing show is used to debut some interesting new production cars and concepts. Some of the styling and technology seen on new cars at this show can pass on to future products in the UK market.

Here’s our pick of the best cars featured at this year’s Beijing Motor Show.

Range Rover Hybrid Long Wheelbase

Land Rover has previously revealed a hybrid version of its current Range Rover at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, and a long wheelbase model version at the LA Motor Show.

Now in Beijing another Range Rover SUV has made its public debut which combines both the long wheelbase and the diesel-electric hybrid powertrain.

Boasting even more practicality then a standard Range Rover, this model offers an additional 186mm of legroom for rear seat passengers, plus the option of the executive seating package.

The powertrain combines a 3.0-litre SDV6 with a 35kW electric motor to return 44.1mpg on the combined cycle. CO2 emissions are recorded at just 169g/km – a remarkable figure for a large luxury SUV model.

Renault Initiale

Previously seen at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Renault Initiale has made another public appearance in Beijing. It represents an interesting new vision as to what future Renualt family cars could look like.

The large creases and swooping roofline give this family MPV a very modern and somewhat sporty appearance even. The cabin of the Initiale only seats four but offers a very roomy cabin with plenty of headspace.

Especially with its large wheels and tall ride height, a car like the Renault Initiale would carry a large presence on public roads.

Peugeot Exalt

This has to be one of the most unique and interesting concept cars to have been revealed for a long time.

The Peugeot Exalt is a coupe-styled saloon with a body consisting of bare steel at the front and middle. At the back meanwhile the Exalt uses a red textile material which Peugeot calls "Shark Skin".This special material is designed to improve aerodynamic performance and subsequently benefit fuel economy.

The engine inside is a 270bhp 1.6-litre THP petrol engine supported with a 50kW electric motor. This hybrid powertrain delivers a maximum output of 340bhp. A six-speed automatic gearbox is also featured in the concept.

Citroen DS 6WR

The DS 6WR is the first premium SUV concept ever created by the French brand Citroen. This is also the first SUV model for the stylish DS sub-brand.

This car is a sign of where Citroen is heading with its future design direction and the signs are promising as the SUV looks very sophisticated.

Higlights include the front grille which has two chrome-finished wings connecting it to the headlamps. The exterior light signature meanwhile features Xenon technology for better visibility during night time driving.

The engines available include a 160bhp 1.6-litre e-THP petrol unit and another petrol unit, a 200bhp 1.6-litre THP motor.

Renault Captur

The Renault Captur is starting to make an impact over in the Chinese market but it has already been on sale here in the UK for nearly a year now.

During its first year on sale here in Britain the Renault Captur compact crossover has performed well in terms of sales, and struck a chord with customers thanks to its trendy styling and reliability.

In the recently published 2014 Driver Power survey, where UK motorists rate how satisfied they are with their car, the Captur was rated second best out of all the SUV/Off-road models in the final result.

The Renault Captur, currently priced from £12,495, offers several frugal engines returning up to 76.4mpg on the combined fuel cycle.

Standard equipment in the Captur range includes cruise control, Hill start assist and Bluetooth connectivity. The car also has a five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP.
