The March sales figures capped off a record first quarter for Kia with 21,608 vehicles registered. Kia’s previous best single month performance was in September last year when customers bought 12,728 new vehicles and the performance was 17.3 per cent up over March 2013 and 16.2 per cent up over September 2013.
The Kia Sportage retained its position as Kia’s best seller with 3,784 sold in March and 5,649 delivered during the first quarter. Following the Sportage was the Picanto with 3,114 sold, Rio reaching 2,638, the Cee’d family with 2,511 delivered and the Venga with sales totalling 1,144.
Kia’s March sales represented a 3.18 per cent market share and during the first quarter the brand’s total represented a 3.14 per cent share of the UK new car market.
The President and CEO of Kia Motors UK, Paul Philpott, commented: “This is a fantastic performance by our dealers and I am particularly pleased that it is retail customers who represent our single biggest audience with nearly 60 per cent of sales going to private buyers.
“Equally satisfying is that corporate sales through our dealers are also very strong as this ensures network profitability and growth – a major target in our growth strategy."
Philpott added: “It is clear that the Kia product line-up, our well-established quality and reliability standards and our industry-leading seven year warranty continue to appeal strongly to motorists looking to make their motoring investment work effectively for them."
For the start of 2014 Kia updated its best selling model, the Sportage, which received styling and equipment upgrades.
The engine line-up is virtually unchanged for the Sportage but the model range now features two extra variants, bringing the total to 16. An all-wheel drive powertrain with a 134bhp 2.0-litre CRDi diesel has been added for the entry-level model.
Exterior styling changes include a redesigned front grille and redesigned alloy wheels. Inside meanwhile the 2014 Kia Sportage adds new soft-touch materials for the dashboard and upper door trims. The centre console has also been given a new cleared design and the door speakers have been repositioned.
Each model in the updated Sportage range also has a redesigned instrument display. With higher trim levels this now incorporates a 4.3-inch infotainment screen.
Pricing for the Kia Sportage currently starts at £17,495.
