According to figures released by data experts Experian, the family car saw a 4.5 per cent increase in used sales during 2012. As a result its managed to knock Ford’s other top-selling vehicle, the Fiesta, off the top spot – a position the Fiesta had previously held since 2007.
Although both the Ford Fiesta and the Vauxhall Corsa, which came third in the list, managed to oversee a 1 per cent increase in sales over the same period, they were held off of the top spot by the Focus.
Despite the growth in sales for the three models listed above, overall used cars sales decreased in 2012, when compared to the previous year.
In total, 6,7430,080 used cars were sold in dealerships throughout the UK, showing a 0.4 per cent fall from the 6,768,759 that were sold in 2011.
Dissecting the market shows that the largest growth in used car sales could be found in the SUV segment, where an increase of 5.2 per cent was recorded in 2012, compared to 2011.
Furthermore, the most popular SUV sold in UK dealerships was the Land Rover Freelander. Sales of the Freelander managed to increase by 4.5 per cent when compared to the previous year.
There was bad news for the MPV sector, however, with sales falling for the first time since 2005 – dropping by 1.1 per cent.
Viewing the whole top ten for used car sales in 2012, a total of seven Perrys-brand models are featured on the list. The other models on the top ten list include the Vauxhall Astra, Renault Clio, Peugeot 206 and the Ford Mondeo.
The performance of Ford and Vauxhall in the current used car market is similar to both companies continuing strong performance in the UK new car market. The Ford Focus along with the Fiesta and the Vauxhall Astra and Corsa have been frequently amongst the top five best selling new cars in Britain during the past few years alone.
