In production from 2003, the small diesel engine now comes in three versions, one with fixed geometry turbocharger and two with variable geometry turbocharger, with variable power between 70bhp and 95bhp.
The MultiJet engine designated no. 5,000,000 was built at Fiat’s Powertrain Technologies plant in Bielsko-Biala, Poland. This particular unit has 85bhp and will be used in a new Fiat 500L model.
The 1.3-litre MultiJet diesel is also available with virtually every other car and van model in the current Fiat range. These models include the Fiat 500 hatchback, the Fiat Panda, the Fiat Punto and the Fiat Doblo.
The Multijet engine is even also used for certain models from different brands owned by Fiat. Examples of this include the Alfa Romeo Mito supermini and the Chrysler Ypsilon, the latter of which is heavily based on the Fiat 500.
The historic milestone also highlights the production qualities of the Fiat Powertrain Technologies plant in Poland which also builds another Fiat engine, the award-winning 0.9-litre TwinAir petrol unit. The TwinAir engine is of course known as an impressively efficient unit and it was also named the International Engine of the Year back in 2011.
The TwinAir engine back then also distinguished itself in three other rankings, including the category dedicated to engines with a capacity of less than a litre, in ‘Green Engine of the Year’ and in ‘Best New Engine of the Year’.
These prestigious awards for the engines produced by Fiat Powertrain Technologies Poland at Bielsko-Biala are in recognition of the innovative solutions applied by the engineers to reduce environmental impact, both in terms of the product and its production processes, in addition to confirming a high level of employee involvement at all levels.
All current models from the Fiat model range available with one or more MultiJet diesel engine options are available in the UK now, from Perrys Fiat Dealerships. These dealerships can be found in Amersham, Aylesbury and Portsmouth.
