This is according to research from the automotive data provider Polk, who found that in the last three months of 2012 the Focus ST accounted for 44 per cent of all hot hatch sales within this period.
That’s a higher percentage of sales then key rivals including the Volkswagen Golf GTI and the Renaultsport Megane, which accounted for 33 per cent and 12 per cent of sales in this period respectively.
Total Focus ST sales in this final three month period of 2012 were 1,984 units. The Ford Focus ST was the top-selling hot hatch in the UK during this time. It also topped hot hatch sales in other European countries including Denmark, Finland, and the Netherlands.
The latest generation Ford Focus ST first launched to markets including the UK back in September 2012, and it has since also become available in an estate bodystyle. Pricing for the hot hatch specification currently begins from £21,995.
The Focus ST represents Ford’s first truly global performance car, having launched in North America last year and being introduced in the Asia Pacific regions this year.
The hot hatch has picked up healthy praise in the UK motoring scene alone. It has already scooped numerous UK awards including Best Hot Hatch from Auto Express magazine and the Hot Hatch of the Year accolade from Top Gear magazine.
Equipped with a 247bhp 2.0-litre Ecoboost petrol engine, the five-door Focus ST hot hatch can cover the 0-62mph sprint in just 6.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 154mph. The engine also permits the Focus ST to return 39mpg while CO2 emissions are at 169g/km.
Ford has sold a total of 3,819 new units of the Focus ST in Europe since it first launch, 74 per cent hatchbacks and 26 per cent estate wagons.
Ford is extending the Ford ST range with the introduction of the new 180bhp Fiesta ST this month, the fastest-ever production Fiesta that achieves 0-62mph in 6.9 seconds and 137mph top speed.
Powered by a 1.6-litre EcoBoost engine, the new Fiesta ST also offers a new chassis, steering and brakes as well as enhanced Torque Vectoring Control and three-mode Electronic Stability Control.
The latest Ford Focus ST meanwhile is available to UK motorists right now from Perrys Ford Dealerships found in Aylesbury and High Wycombe.
