Best green cars from the 2013 Geneva Motor Show

Earlier this month we viewed over the best family cars and the best sports cars to attend this year’s motoring show in Geneva.

This time today we take a look at the best green car models which could arrive at your local Perrys Dealership in the near future, including a selection of electric-only vehicles and a more unique hybrid model making its public debut.

Chevrolet Spark EV

Previously revealed at the 2012 Los Angeles Motor show last November, the Chevrolet Spark EV has created a lot of interest within markets spread worldwide ever since it was first revealed.

The all-electric supermini is confirmed to reach European showrooms by 2014.

The five-door hatchback will utilise an all-new magnet electric motor which produces the equivalent of about 130bhp. This is enough to give the city car a 0-62mph sprint time of just 8.5 seconds, over three seconds less than the highest performing model from the standard petrol-driven Chevrolet Spark range.

The electric motor is charged by a lithium-ion battery system with more than 20 kWh stored. This system operates with the help of an active liquid cooling and heating system.

So sophisticated is the technology behind the battery pack, the Spark EV is expected to achieve an electric range that is among the best in its class, well over 100 miles in fact.

The standard petrol-powered Chevrolet Spark is available now from Perrys Chevrolet Dealerships based in Dover and Rotherham.

Nissan Leaf

The Nissan Leaf electric hatchback is getting some major updates for 2013. The multi-award winning electric family car gains better charging performance, more equipment onboard and greater variety, as buyers will now have three specifications of the vehicle to choose from.

The Leaf’s electric motor is mounted underneath the cabin area to lower the centre of gravity for optimum handling.

In addition, by moving the charger from the rear of the vehicle to a new position underneath the bonnet, the luggage area has been increased by 40 litres – meaning that the overall boot capacity is now a massive 370 litres.

The nose of the Leaf itself has also been redesigned to enhance the Leaf’s already impressive aerodynamic capabilities further.

Earlier examples of the Nissan Leaf hatchback are still available in the UK from Perrys Nissan Dealership in Blackburn.

Peugeot 2008 Hybrid Air

The Peugeot 2008 is one of the prototypes recently demonstrated at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, showcasing the new air and petrol driven hybrid technology which is set to reach future production models.

The project has been created in collaboration between both Peugeot and Citroen and has also been demonstrated on a unique Citroen C3 prototype.

The air-powered technology operates in co-operation with a standard petrol engine by positioning a motor and a pump in the unit’s engine bay. This is then fed by a compressed air tank situated underneath the car, which runs parallel to the exhaust.

The first production models with this impressive hybrid powertrain are expected to arrive in 2016, boasting immense fuel economy and very low CO2 emissions. As demonstrated on vehicles like the 2008 Hybrid Air the new hybrid technology can keep CO2 outputs below 70g/km.

Renault Zoe

The long-awaited Renault Zoe was an attendant at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, as the all-electric hatchback awaits its expected launch during spring 2013.

The five-door Renault Zoe already boasts a nomination for the World Green Car of the Year accolade for this year and recently acquired a maximum five-star rating from Euro NCAP.

Set to start pricing from £17,983, the Renault Zoe hatchback is driven by an 88bhp electric motor to deliver a projected travel range of 130 miles with zero CO2 emissions recorded in the process.

This means the Zoe customers will benefit from exemption on paid Road Tax, and running costs all-round should be kept pleasingly low.

The Renault Zoe will be available to buy later this year from Perrys Renault Dealership in Aylesbury.

Land Rover Defender All-Terrain Electric

At the 2013 Geneva Motor Show the British car brand Land Rover attended with seven examples of a new electric Defender 4×4.

The research vehicles demonstrate the company’s latest thinking towards potentially making a fully-dedicated production SUV which will be capable of tackling tough terrain using an electric-driven powertrain.

The electric Defender uses a 70kW electric motor with the equivalent of 94bhp, twinned with a 300-volt, lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 27kWh, giving the 4×4 a range of more than 50 miles.

In typical, low speed off-road use however, the 4×4 can reportedly last for up to eight hours before it needs a recharge.

The standard Land Rover Defender range, which uses a 2.2-litre diesel engine, is available to UK motorists now from Perrys Land Rover Dealerships based in Halifax and Huddersfield.
