GT-R joins Nissan's spectacular new Nismo range

The GT-R Nismo will join alongside the Juke Nismo and the new 370Z Nismo to complete the updated and dynamic model range. Nismo is already a well-established name amongst motorsports and performance car enthusiasts in Japan and to millions of global gaming enthusiasts.

Now with this latest Nismo line-up Nissan will use it to target other performance division brands, such as the popular BMW M brand and the Mercedes AMG division. The current plan from Nissan is to release at least one Nismo performance every year up until at least 2016.

Much of the planning and process for the new Nismo models will be undertaken at a new Global Headquarters centre in Yokohama which was officially opened by Nissan in a ceremony this week.

The Nissan GT-R Nismo is the third and most recent model to be announced for Nissan’s updated performance line-up. The standard Nissan GT-R is already a highly impressive sports car with 550bhp, a top speed of 195mph and a 0-60mph sprint time of just 2.8 seconds.

The Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn, speaking during the opening ceremony for Nismo’s new Headquarters, commented: “It would be unthinkable for us to develop a range of Nismo road cars without including the GT-R”.

He added: “The standard road car is a global supercar and the GT-R’s performance on track reflects the passion and talents of the Nismo team. The GT-R Nismo will be special and I can’t wait to drive it”.

The Nismo performance branch will have a very close understanding of the GT-R, thanks to its knowledge garnered from racing the GT-R. It represents a good precursor to the development of the new Nismo road car which will be based on the 2013 GT-R.

While the prospect of a new extra performance-focused GT-R will no doubt excite many, two other models are set to arrive for the new Nismo range before this supercar.

The first arrival for the new performance range will be the Juke Nismo, which is already available to order in the UK now with first deliveries due in March 2013. Pricing for the Nissan Juke Nismo starts from £19,995.

Nissan’s engineers have produced a new, aerodynamic exterior to transform the performance of the Juke in its Nismo specification. New features evident on the Juke Nismo include the lower bumpers, wider wings and sill side skirts.

Airflow is better controlled with the Juke Nismo’s modified grille and tailgate spoiler to improve efficiency and performance.

Also included are 18-inch alloy wheels shod in wider tyres, red mirror door caps, and a pinstripe design around the car’s base.

The engine meanwhile is a 1.6-litre direct injection turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine. This allows the car to accelerate from 0-62mph in just 7.8 seconds, and is able to hit a top speed of 134mph.

The Juke Nismo also returns a combined fuel economy figure of 40.9mpg and 159g/km CO2 emissions.

Also arriving from Nismo this year is a new enhanced version of the 370Z coupe, which unlike the Juke Nismo will be built at Nissan’s UK Sunderland plant. Details on its pricing and release date will be revealed at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show next month which the coupe will attend.

The 370Z Nismo utilises the same 3.7-litre petrol engine as the standard Nissan 370Z Coupe, connected to a six-speed manual gearbox. However thanks to some tuning alterations the total output has been increased from 326bhp to 335bhp.

This power boost allows the 370Z Nismo to cut its the 0-62mph sprint time down by a tenth of a second compared to the standard coupe, taking it just 5.2 seconds in total to be exact.

As well as the extra power and speed, the Nissan 370Z Nismo also has improved aerodynamics and lighter, sportier components then the standard coupe to deliver an even more enthralling driving experience to those who own it.

To make the aerodynamic gains, the front end features a more aggressive design improving airflow under the car, leading to improved stability at higher speeds and through corners. This extra downforce is complemented by an extensively re-engineered suspension and chassis set-up, enhancing stability and handling on both road and track.

All of this and more is what sports car fans have got to look forward from Nissan in the near future.

UK motorists will be able to look out for models of the new Nissan Nismo range by visiting Perrys Nissan Dealership found in Blackburn.
