As the UK is currently gripped by a harsh winter, with snow- and ice-covered roads all over the nation, motorists face an increased risk of accidents and delays due to conditions such as reduced visibility.
The test drivers at Ford have an abundance of experience driving in such poor conditions, and can offer sensible suggestions for trouble-free motoring during the winter.
All new Ford vehicles are available with a wide array of features, all designed to assist drivers in low temperatures.
For example, the new Ford Fiesta comes equipped with a Torque Vectoring Control system which enhances cornering capabilities on snow and ice.
With Ford Quickclear windscreen technology, snow and ice will melts away at the touch of a button, avoiding the need to scrape the ice off manually in freezing temperatures – or wait for the heating system to fire-up to temperature.
In case of any accidents or emergencies, Ford’s SYNC software features Emergency Assistance which helps to place a call to emergency operators in 26 European languages and gives the operator the vehicles GPS co-ordinates.
Although driving on snow and ice can send some motorists into a panic, it does not have to be as stressful as it appears. Ford engineer, Eddy Kasteel, spends his winters testing vehicles on frozen lakes in northern Sweden and has some simple tips for safe and trouble-free driving on cold and slippery surfaces.
Kasteel says that: “It’s important to reduce your speed in wintry conditions because braking distances can be ten times longer or more.
“Fortunately, advances in electronic technology means today’s Fords make it a lot easier to drive on snow and ice – like new Fiesta’s Torque Vectoring Control and Electronic Stability Control.”
He added: “Even the very best drivers don’t have the car control skills to compete with systems such as these.”
The 2012 Ford Fiesta is available with an array of other useful safety features including hill-launch assist, auto-city-stop, Ford’s EcoBoost technology and much more besides.
A new Ford Fiesta is currently available from £9,795.
