Manchester United’s longest away trip in this season’s Barclay’s Premier League is to newcomers Southampton and if manager Sir Alex Ferguson wants to drive himself, he now has the perfect car.
The 250-mile trip will not be a problem for the long-serving manager after he took delivery of a Chevrolet Volt hatchback.
The Chevrolet Volt is a previous European Car of the Year winner alongside the almost-identical Vauxhall Ampera.
Chevrolet has recently signed an eye-watering sponsorship package with Manchester United and as part of the deal the manager has taken delivery of a model.
And even those away trips to Southampton will not be a struggle for Fergie despite the Chevrolet Volt running on electric power.
The standard range of an electric car is around 100 miles, less than half the distance between Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium and St Marys in Southampton.
Once batteries are depleted on standard electric cars it generally takes between six and eight hours to recharge them again.
However, the Chevrolet Volt and the Vauxhall Ampera are the first cars to offer extended-range electric powertrains.
This means although electric energy powers the Volt’s wheels at all times via an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery, the car can travel 350 miles on a single charge with the help of an on-board petrol engine.
Unlike hybrid cars, which allow the engine to power the wheels directly, the Volt’s engine simply recharges the battery on the move.
This gives the Chevrolet Volt stunningly-low emissions and running costs. The Volt emits just 27g/km of CO2 emissions – in comparison the most frugal Ford Fiesta emits over 85g/km – and delivers zero UK road tax.
It also offers fuel economy of up to 230mpg – more than double that of the impressive 2013 Ford Fiesta – making it one of the most efficient cars on the road today.
For shorter journeys (for example, to Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium), Fergie can even use purely electric power offering zero emissions for up to 50 miles.
All this comes in the shape of an upmarket hatchback with five doors and space for four in the spacious interior.
Manchester United Manager Sir Alex Ferguson said: “I think the Volt is absolutely phenomenal. A friend of mine drove one in the States and kept going on and on about it, so when I had the opportunity I said ‘yeah I’m going to try it because it’s the car of the future, really’. I’m very pleased with it.”
And you can’t really get higher praise than that.
The Chevrolet Volt is available now from around £30,000 at Perrys Chevrolet dealerships.
