The small hatchback, which is the most popular new car in the UK in terms of sales in 2012, has been named as the ‘Used Car of the Year 2012’ by industry judges.
It was described as ‘the perfect used car choice for motorists and used car dealers’ by the judging panel, who based the decision on a host of factors including affordability, reputation and popularity.
How practical the car is and how much of a ‘friend’ the car is to both dealerships and drivers also played a part in the car’s victory.
The Ford Fiesta took the award because of its ‘real life’ qualities, according to CAP, which praised its ‘great, affordable ownership experience’.
Meanwhile, more expensive, better-equipped cars were rejected because they were deemed to not hold the same value as the Fiesta.
According to judges, the Fiesta has a desirable image, fresh looks, is reliable and is ‘a car loved by young and old as well as a versatile workhorse, great drive and styling.’
Mark Norman, of CAP, said: “It is always tempting for the motoring media and other industry observers to take the ‘petrol head’ approach when giving awards to cars which excite them but the CAP Used Car of the Year Award recognises the contribution a car really makes to consumers and dealers alike.
“Equally it is simplistic to merely look at the percentage of its new value a car retains and then declare that it is a good used car buy because, most of the time, it only means it’s an expensive used car to buy.
The Ford Fiesta, priced from £10,000 when new, is available in three- and five-door variations and with a selection of petrol and diesel engines.
