Danger drivers ignoring winter maintenance checks

According to breakdown company Green Flag, up to 3.6 million UK motorists are in danger this year because they are ignoring simple winter maintenance techniques.

This includes one in ten people who will not check tyre tread – a problem which could lead to loss of control.

A bald tyre, or a tyre whose depth is not 1.6mm around the centre three-quarters, is illegal to use on UK roads and can cause accidents in wet or icy weather.

The research shows a quarter of drivers have not checked their battery and one in ten will not check oil this winter.

Alarmingly, over half of all drivers do not carry a torch, blanket, jump leads, drinks, food or shovels in the UK.

Miranda Schunke, spokesperson for Green Flag, said: “The findings show that millions of drivers are ignoring these vital winter preparations and choosing not to keep basic winter driving essentials in their vehicles. As the evenings get darker and driving conditions deteriorate this is extremely risky.”

Perrys is urging drivers to book a winter health check at a Perrys service centre. The winter health check is carried out by fully trained professionals and any repairs use official manufacturer parts.

The Perrys winter health check is a 12-point check that covers tyre condition and pressure, brake fluid level, battery, oil, coolant, lights, shock absorber, drive belt, air con, wiper blades, brake pads and disks and the body of the car.

According to a Perrys spokesperson: “Your Winter Health Check will give your car everything it needs to get you to all those important meetings and social occasions throughout the festive period and beyond, and it will also give you important peace of mind.”
