Ford may have revealed its new 2013 Fiesta this week but the current model is still the most popular car in the UK, according to the latest sales figures.
Data released by the Society of Motoring Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show nearly 3,000 Ford Fiesta cars were registered in August 2012.
This is more than 500 ahead of its nearest rival, the similar-size Vauxhall Corsa supermini and 1,000 more than the Ford Focus small family car in third place.
The Ford Fiesta, available in three- or five-door body styles from under £10,000 is also the best-seller in 2012 so far with 70,000 sold compared to 55,000 for the Vauxhall Corsa.
Its popularity comes courtesy of the car’s low starting price, superb handling and grip and compact dimensions.
A popular car with young drivers, city-based drivers and down-sizers, the Ford Fiesta was also the best-selling car of 2011.
New 62 plate Ford Fiesta cars, available from Perrys Ford dealerships this month, are expected to top the charts again in September 2012.
As the Ford Fiesta topped the market, sales of other cars helped the UK record an increase in new car registrations of 0.1 per cent compared to the same month last year.
This was boosted by the success of the Fiesta, Corsa and Focus as well as the Vauxhall Astra in fifth place and a third Vauxhall car, the Zafira, in ninth.
The Vauxhall Zafira enters the top ten best-sellers for the first time this year after the launch of the upmarket Vauxhall Zafira Tourer seven-seat MPV earlier this year.
The Zafira Tourer is the second car to use the brand’s new-look front end that incorporates LED running lights and boomerang-shaped headlamps.
The first was the Vauxhall Ampera, which was launched this year as the brand’s first extended-range electric vehicle.
