The annual awards saw the 247bhp Ford Focus performance car take the best hot hatch in 2012 title ahead of the Vauxhall Astra VXR.
Ford’s latest performance-oriented Focus, which is available in five-door hatchback and estate body styles, has been ordered by over 450 people since the order books opened in September 2011.
Deliveries began last month for the £21,995 hot hatch and it has now been honoured in the Auto Express awards.
Key to its success, according to the judges, were the performance figures offered up by the 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine.
The engine offers 25bhp more power than previous ST versions and can reach a top speed of 155mph. Acceleration is swift; 0-62mph takes just 6.5 seconds in the hot hatch.
However, the Ford Focus ST’s main selling point is its power and performance matched to an affordable price and the ability to be used as an everyday car.
Steve Fowler, Auto Express editor-in-chief, said: “The Focus ST has the performance figures to back up its looks – and with a price to please.”
The Ford Focus ST was not the only Ford to take an award at the Auto Express awards in 2012. The Ford C-Max, the Focus-based people carrier, was named best five-seat MPV of 2012 at the ceremony.
The Ford C-Max took the title because of the introduction of a new 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine. The three-cylinder engine was named International Engine of the Year because of its ability to improve performance compare to larger engines but reduce emissions.
The Ford C-Max was also praised for its high levels of safety technology including the introduction of blind spot alert and the automatic parallel parking system.
The new 2013 Ford Focus ST and the Ford C-Max MPV are available now at Perrys Ford dealerships.
