Rally driver Ken Block and his 650bhp Ford Fiesta are probably one of the most famous internet driver and car phenomena in recent years.
This is down to his ‘Gymkhana’ videos, which usually see Block sliding the car around vast sets. The latest video, Gymkhana 4, saw Block thrashing the car through a Hollywood-style set to spectacular effect.
Overall, the first four videos have been lucrative for Ford, who uses them to promote its rally car’s abilities.
To date, the videos have been watched an incredible 140 million times – and a new Gorkhana is set to push that figure up even further.
On July 9th, Gymkhana 5 will be released and a teaser video gives a major hint into what to expect.[YouTube:fipuxSwWIGI]
The Gymkhana 5 teaser video shows Block performing ‘donuts’ on a barge in San Francisco Bay against the backdrop of the Golden Gate Bridge.
“My idea for Gymkhana 5 was simple,” said Block. “I wanted to build on the ultimate playground concept from Gymkhana 3, and bring the franchise back to that raw and fast feel that the earlier videos had. I’ve always wanted to film a Gymkhana video in a city and there are few places as unique and iconic with such amazing topography as San Francisco.”
Ford promises to break world records and include a surprise guest in Gymkhana 5 – which is being sponsored by Ford’s road-going Ford Focus ST, a performance-oriented take on the standard Ford Focus.
While it is some way off Block’s bespoke 650bhp rally car, the new Ford Focus ST, it does offer a feisty 247bhp and a 0-62mph time of 6.5 seconds.
Extra sporty body kit is included, as are racing seats and other tweaks aimed at improving performance and the sporty appeal of the car.
It may not match the car used in Gymkhana 5, but it is one of the best affordable performance hatches on the market today.
